1. Let's get one thing out of the way right off the bat. Movies ain't cheap to make these days. Which of these titles did *not* have a $200 million production budget?
Iron Man 2
The Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time
Robin Hood
Toy Story 3
By way of explanation.....
While we are always dubious about these numbers, Iron Man 2 is listed at "only" $170 million.

2. Now that you've (correctly?) guessed which one of these four titles is cheapest, please tell us which one has the highest production budget.
Iron Man 2
The Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time
Robin Hood
Toy Story 3
By way of explanation.....
Toy Story 3 and The Prince of Persia cost $200 million each to create. That leaves Robin Hood with its unconscionable $210 million budget, the worst investment this side of JaMarcus Russell.

3. Okay, I promised that this box office quiz would be a lot easier than the last few. I'll prove that with this gimme: which summer release is the only one to earn a billion dollars in worldwide revenue?
Iron Man 2
Jonah Hex
Shrek Forever After
Toy Story 3
By way of explanation.....
Eat your heart out, DreamWorks! Toy Story 3 became the first animated film to reach this mark as well as the second Disney release this year. Most impressive.

4. Which summer 2010 release had the largest opening weekend?
Babies
Iron Man 2
Shrek Forever After
Toy Story 3
By way of explanation.....
Unless we're talking vaginal openings during labor, the answer isn't Babies. It's Iron Man 2, whose $128.1 million easily beats Toy Story 3's $110.3M. Of course, Toy Story 3 went on to prove that this is a marathon, not a sprint, by earning roughly $100 million more domestically than Iron Man 2.

5. Among the May releases, which non-sequel had the largest opening weekend?
Letters to Juliet
MacGruber
The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Robin Hood
By way of explanation.....
Robin Hood's $36.1 million debut is the best followed by Prince's $30.1 million then Letters' $13.5 million. These totals combined are ~$50 million shy of what Iron Man 2 did on its own. The Haves cah-rushed the Have Nots this summer.

6. Other than Iron Man 2, there were seven more May wide releases. How many of these titles (Letters to Juliet, Sex and the City 2, Robin Hood, Just Wright, The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Shrek Forever After, MacGruber) earned over $100 million domestically?
0
1
2
All of them but MacGruber.
By way of explanation.....
Only Shrek Forever After ($238.4 million) and Robin Hood ($105.3 million) reached this milestone. Both Memorial Day releases fell in the $90-$95 million range. MacGruber missed by only $92 million.

7. The primary reason that so many potential tentpole releases get massive production budgets is that their expenses are oftentimes recouped through international box office revenue. Other than Toy Story 3, which of these May titles did the best overseas?
Iron Man 2
The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Robin Hood
Shrek Forever After
By way of explanation.....
I'm guessing that 97% of the wrong answers are for Iron Man 2 ($310 million abroad), but the unwelcome Shrek sequel torched it by $170 million.

8. How many May releases finished in first place for a weekend at any point during their domestic runs?
1
2
3
4
By way of explanation.....
Iron Man 2 and Shrek Forever After dominated the weekend box office, sharing five consecutive first place finishes. Sequelitis is the worst disease this side of syphillis. Or MacGruber.

9. Like you, I enjoy laughing at the unmitigated failure of others. Which of these May/June releases had the worst opening weekend?
Jonah Hex
Just Wright
MacGruber
Splice
By way of explanation.....
MacGruber's $4.0 million debut leaves it looking up at Jonah Hex ($5.4 million), Splice ($7.4 million) and Just Wright ($8.3 million) with envy. Congrats to the producers of Just Wright for "winning"!

10. Here is another easy one. Other than Toy Story 3, which June release had the best domestic box office tally?
The A-Team
Grown Ups
The Karate Kid
Marmaduke
By way of explanation.....
Sorry Marmaduke, you lost. The correct answer is The Karate Kid, whose $176.5 million edges Grown Ups' $160.7 million. Cobra Kai 4eva! (PS: I know they're not in it. Also: Shaddup.)

11. Warning: this may or may not be a trick question. Other than Toy Story 3, which June release had the best performance in terms of international box office?
The A-Team
The Karate Kid
Knight & Day
Killers
By way of explanation.....
At the time of publication of this quiz, The Karate Kid has earned $167.8 million while Knight & Day has managed $152.6 million. None of the others has broken $100 million. Also, foreigners hate Katherine Heigl just as much as you and I do.

12. After Toy Story 3 and The Karate Kid, which June release had the best opening weekend?
Get Him to the Greek
Grown Ups
Killers
Knight & Day
By way of explanation.....
Grown Ups was one of the few summer releases to open north of $40 million albeit barely at $40.5 million.

13. Which mega-blockbuster had the single biggest day of box office this summer?
Inception
Iron Man 2
Toy Story 3
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
By way of explanation.....
Eclipse earned $68.5 million on its first day in theaters. In a calendar related quirk, it only earned $64.8 million during its first weekend a couple of days later.

14. Warning: this may or may not be a trick question. Which July release had the best opening weekend?
Despicable Me
Inception
The Last Airbender
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
By way of explanation.....
Eclipse wins, but it's a lot closer than you may think. The margin of victory is only $2 million with Eclipse's $64.8 million narrowly edging Inception's $62.8 million.

15. How many May/June releases earned north of $200 million domestically?
1
2
3
5
By way of explanation.....
Iron Man 2, Shrek Forever After and Toy Story 3 are the only three to reach this milestone.

16. How many July releases earned north of $200 million domestically?
0
1
2
3
By way of explanation.....
Whereas May/June was weak, July saw three prolific entries into the marketplace. Despicable Me, Inception and Eclipse all currently fall in the $240-$300 million range.

17. How many summer releases spent multiple weekends in first place at the box office?
0
3
5
6
By way of explanation.....
Iron Man 2, Shrek Forever After, Toy Story 3, Inception, and The Expendables all managed this feat, which wasn't as rare as usual in the summer of 2010.

18. Which of these July releases had a reported budget of less than $150 million?
Inception
The Last Airbender
Salt
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
By way of explanation.....
Salt cost $110 million while The Last Airbender was made for $150 million and Inception and The Sorcerer's Apprentice cost $160 million. Yes, The Sorcerer's Apprentice cost $160 million. Yikes.

19. Surprisingly, all three of the non-Inception films listed in the previous question at least theoretically matched their production budgets in terms of worldwide box office revenue. Out of those and Despicable Me, which one has the best global total?
Despicable Me
The Last Airbender
Salt
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
By way of explanation.....
As of this publication date, Despicable Me is at $325 million, The Last Airbender is at $281.4 million, Salt is at $272.5 million and Nic Cage's ridiculous costume is at $189.8 million.

20. Name the only July wide release to open to less than $10 million.
Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore
Charlie St. Cloud
Ramona and Beezus
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
By way of explanation.....
Sorry, Beverly Cleary fans, Ramona and Beezus managed a lowly $7.8 million debut although it did wind up with an okay $25.5 million overall.

21. How many summer releases have earned more than half a billion dollars in global revenue?
3
5
7
9
By way of explanation.....
The usual suspects (Shrek Forever After, Toy Story 3, and Iron Man 2) join The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Inception on this exclusive list of five.

22. August is usually a brutal dumping ground for not-quite summer quality summer releases. Which of these despised titles had the worst opening weekend?
Lottery Ticket
Nanny McPhee Returns
The Switch
Vampires Suck
By way of explanation.....
Nanny McPhee's $8.4 million throws under the (woeful) competition, a few thousand less than The Switch. If you're last out of that bunch, you're really hurting.

23. What was the biggest August opener?
Eat Pray Love
The Expendables
The Other Guys
Takers
By way of explanation.....
The Other Guys defeats The Expendables by only $700k. The difference between second and third place is significant, over $10 million.

24. There was no The Hangover to be found this summer. Not counting animation, which comedy was the strongest domestic performer for the summer of 2010?
Dinner for Schmucks
Get Him to the Greek
Grown Ups
The Other Guys
By way of explanation.....
Grown Ups is currently almost $50 million ahead of the competition and will win comfortably with a $160 million domestic tally.

25. Finally, let's end the quiz the way we started...with a gimme. Which new concept (i.e. a movie that is not a sequel nor based on a videogame, book, television show or Doctor Horrible...wait, MegaMind isn't out yet.) was the strongest performer this summer?
Despicable Me
How to Train Your Dragon
Inception
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Well, it should have been)
By way of explanation.....
A) How to Train Your Dragon wasn't even a summer release. B) Scott Pilgrim...well, the books are selling well. So, that leaves the other two and the answer is obviously Inception. Yay for originality
